The Leather Cavesson – Classic for Bitless Work
Lungeing, ground work on a long rein, classical work in hand or riding (bitless, or with a snaffle bridle fitted over the cavesson) - a cavesson really belongs in every horse owner's basic equipment. The three rings on the cavesson's noseband allow you to clip on a lunge line or lead rope, or reins, giving a pain-free, mouth-friendly way of influencing the horse's poll position. Traditionally the cavesson is used for work with inexperienced horses, but its possibilities are far from exhausted by that. The growing interest in bitless lungeing and riding has opened up a considerably wider field of use for the cavesson.
Which cavesson should I buy?
Most horse owners prefer leather as the material for a cavesson: it looks good, is robust and easy to care for. In addition, on a cavesson with a metal noseband, leather allows for effective padding of the metal parts of the noseband. Anyone who would rather buy a cheaper alternative to a leather cavesson opts for nylon.
When choosing the right cavesson, the next question is the model: with a metal noseband or iron-free light, classic German/Austrian style with a multi-part metal noseband, Spanish serreta (with a fixed, one-piece steel nose bar), or French caveçon with a chain?
The conservative choice is, as horse experts largely agree, a good one for almost every horse: if you buy a leather cavesson with a noseband that has a wide bearing surface and metal parts connected by movable hinges, you are usually on the right track both in terms of fit and in terms of the possibilities for focused work and precise rein aids.
