Sheepskin - whether on or under the saddle - has a tradition in almost all working riding styles: anyone who spends days in the saddle knows how to appreciate a sheepskin under the seat. The horse benefits in a very similar way: with a saddle blanket made of sheepskin (and possibly a matching soft girth protector), the horse is also more relaxed.
 
What sheepskin can do for your horse
 
First, a serious word: a sheepskin saddle pad is not the solution for significant pressure points. It cannot make an ill-fitting saddle fit.
 
But: if the saddle fit is correct and there are still problems, a sheepskin saddle pad - especially for horses with sensitive skin or a sensitive back - is an extra layer of protection warmly recommended by saddle fitters against chafing, impact and pressure, which can still occur even with a well-fitted saddle during intensive work and vigorous movement.
 
Sheepskin is also fantastically skin-friendly: thanks to its fibre structure and natural wool fat, the natural material has a temperature- and moisture-regulating effect and even has antimicrobial properties. This makes it ideally suited to preventing heat build-up and keeping the saddle area clean and dry naturally. Riders whose horses tend to have clogged sebaceous glands in particular have had very good experiences with sheepskin pads.
