The Right Saddle for the Freiberger
Displaced by the Tractor and Car: Rediscovered as a Family Horse
The Freiberger is a light to medium-weight draft horse, and the last original Swiss horse breed. Thanks to its good-natured character and performance, this robust working horse displaced all other Swiss draft breeds in the 19th and early 20th century, and then very nearly fell victim itself to the mechanisation of agriculture, road transport and the military. Enthusiasts took up the breeding and gradually turned the Freiberger into the perfect partner for modern leisure riders and drivers: healthy, good-looking, sure-footed, with supple gaits and a lovable, dependable nature.
Here is a horse that even children, beginners or nervous riders can ride with confidence, an ideal family horse, a great horse for riding stables, and a perfect therapy horse: the good-natured Friby carries every rider safely through the ride and home again.

Buying a Saddle for the Freiberger
The least you can do for such a good companion is to make sure it has a well-fitting saddle. Freibergers can be quite different types: from the somewhat lighter sport Freibergers, shaped by earlier warmblood crossbreeding, to the considerably more powerful, broad original Freibergers, there are many gradations; some young Freibergers turn out to be quite a surprise package in this respect. There's no way around an individual fitting and adjustment of the saddle.

A Few Tips for the Right Freiberger Saddle
As mentioned, Freibergers come in quite different sizes. But one thing applies to all of them: this draft breed has a square build, so Freibergers always have a relatively short back in relation to their wither height. This back generally has generous width, round ribs and moderate curve, the Friby's shoulders are long and gently sloping, and the wither is pronounced. All in all, these characteristics make for a fairly unproblematic saddle position, although the round back shape must be taken into account.
In principle, saddles with the following characteristics suit the Freiberger's needs:
- a wide, broadly angled saddle gullet
- sufficient wither freedom
- a wide spinal channel
- a rather short, but calmly broader bearing surface
On that last point: the Freiberger almost always has the anatomical prerequisites for a saddle with a broad bearing surface. Especially when the saddle needs to be short, this better distributes the rider's weight across the horse's back and reduces saddle pressure.
Freibergers need a saddle with a wide, broadly angled gullet and sufficient wither and spine freedom. The shorter the back, the more sensible a broad bearing surface is. — The right saddle for the Freiberger
We Recommend a Saddle with Adjustable Gullet Width for Freibergers
Freibergers are considered early developers: in Switzerland, and partly in Germany too, young horses of the breed are assessed as early as age three in the so-called field test, not only for conformation but also for their suitability for driving and riding. In other words, while colleagues of other breeds may just be starting lunging work, a Freiberger has usually already had a year of riding training behind it.
A saddle that fits in every respect is important for every horse, but for young horses it is, if anything, even more essential. Skeleton and joints are more sensitive in young horses than in fully grown animals, and mentally too, the course is set for later life in a young horse: if a horse learns at the start of its training that the saddle is associated with pain and discomfort, the resulting active aversion or passive resignation sets the "tone" for its entire life.
At the same time, every horse's build changes quite considerably in its first years of life. Besides normal growth spurts, muscle build-up from training also contributes to this. Most Freibergers are fully grown by around five years of age, but their musculature, and thus their back contour, continues to change beyond that too. Now, hardly any leisure rider can afford to buy a new saddle every year: ideally, the saddle bought for the young Freiberger should fit for its whole life, or at least until it reaches its fully grown and fully muscled build.
That's why we absolutely recommend a saddle with adjustable gullet width for young Freibergers: this way you're equipped for both growth spurts and muscle build-up in your horse. Of course, fully grown Freibergers benefit from an adjustable saddle just as much: even older horses can go through phases of physical change.

An Iberosattel® for the Freiberger? Good Idea!
Finding a riding saddle for a powerful, square-built horse like the Freiberger isn't always easy: many off-the-shelf saddles are too long and/or too narrow. Iberosattel® has developed saddles specifically for this horse type. Originally, we were primarily thinking of our own Spanish horses, but our dressage and Baroque saddles with an extra-broad bearing surface are also an excellent fit for many other short- and round-backed breeds, especially for leisure riding too.

The Iberosattel® Comfort Pad: Less Pressure Load and Good Contact

The larger the bearing surface can be made, the lower the saddle pressure, though of course the limits set by the saddle position for the bearing area must not be exceeded. Broadly padded saddles are then simply much more comfortable and healthier for the horse on long trail rides or training rides. Short-backed horses benefit especially from our saddle solutions: what's missing in bearing surface length, an Iberosattel® with Comfort Pad can, so to speak, "make up for" in width, reducing pressure on the horse's back.
The Comfort Pad's padding, made up of several thin layers, has relatively little bulk and is further reduced in the leg area, so that your weight and leg aids get through well to the Friby. Of course, we adapt the pad individually to your horse, to ensure sufficient width of the spinal channel, a gentle tapering of pressure along the back muscles, and a good match to the individual curve of the back. Since our padding is freely suspended under the saddle, it can also be readjusted again and again without any trouble.

Further Special Features of Iberosattel®

For broad horses like the Freiberger, we offer our synthetic saddle trees with an especially large gullet. Gullet widths above 38 are absolutely no problem. The width and angle of the head plate can be readjusted multiple times later on, to adapt the saddle to physical changes in the horse.
For horses with a pronounced wither, we've developed a special saddle tree with an integrated head plate. The EWF saddle tree (EWF means "extra wither freedom") ensures that the sensitive spinous processes of the thoracic vertebrae never come into direct contact with metal during impacts between saddle and wither.
2. Our saddles offer superior comfort for riders
The right seat size, the seat depth you feel most comfortable riding with, as well as knee rolls that support you the way you want and can also be swapped out as needed (Velcro knee rolls): every one of our saddle models offers a range of options to adapt to your individual riding needs. The Amazona solution, a padded recess in the saddle tree that prevents saddle sores, is included as standard in all our saddles.
To secure your property, we build a hidden Secusad chip into every saddle tree, so your saddle can always be identified and matched to you.
3. The saddles of our premium line are made-to-measure and individually adapted to your wishes
Whether Classic or Premium line: we never sell any of our saddles without a saddle-fitting appointment, advice and individual fitting. We, or one of our partner saddlers, come to you with a selection of our saddles, you have the chance to test ride them, and we measure your horse's back. We individually fit the saddle model you've chosen to your horse.
Our premium saddles are only produced for you after your horse has been measured, entirely individually and to your specifications! During manufacture, we follow your wishes closely with regard to knee rolls, saddle flap length, seat size, colour and many other saddle details.
Adjustable gullet width, EWF saddle tree, Amazona solution, Secusad system, made-to-measure construction: clever detail solutions and individual fitting options make Iberosattel® special. — Further special features of Iberosattel®
This Is Our Saddle Service
The saddle-fitting appointment is, of course, non-binding, but if you decide on one of our saddles, we can immediately take the measurements of your horse's back and, if applicable, note your wishes for the individual manufacture of a premium model.
For saddle models we already have in stock, we adjust the width and padding within a few weeks. If you've decided on a new build, our workshops usually need three to four months, depending on order volume, until delivery of the finished saddle.
At the delivery appointment, we check the saddle fit; any necessary corrections are included in the purchase price. We remain your point of contact going forward too, so that your Ibero fits well for a horse's whole life. If you feel your horse has changed physically, contact us for a re-measurement with subsequent repadding and readjustment of the saddle! (By the way: on request, we also fit used saddles to a new horse.)
