The Right Saddle for Your Icelandic Horse

Tölting with a Baroque Saddle and an Icelandic Horse? Absolutely!

Short, round, cuddly – who doesn't love them, the weatherproof little Icelandic horses? There are around 65,000 of them in Germany, and it's not least their tölt – a special gait without a suspension phase, allowing riding that's almost free of jolting and very easy on the rider's spine – that makes them so popular.

A well-fitting saddle helps keep the pony's back happy too. Unfortunately, finding one is often not so easy. Icelandic horse owners know: saddles developed for the conventional horse type usually don't fit (and if they do, the rider probably won't fit into them...). Saddle specialist Iberosattel® offers saddles that adapt without compromise to the proportions of Icelandic horses.

Saddles developed for the conventional horse type usually don't fit Icelandic horses. Saddles from Iberosattel® adapt uncompromisingly to the proportions of Icelandic horses. — Saddles for Icelandic Horses

Iberosattel® – Who We Are

We are a family-run saddlery based in Freystadt, Bavaria. Since 1999 we have been developing and building baroque and dressage saddles for horses with baroque proportions – and that includes classic baroque horses like Andalusians, Friesians, Lusitanos or Knabstruppers just as much as draft horses and "square" small horses like Haflingers, ponies, or indeed gaited horses like the Icelandic horse.

Because baroque proportions are not a question of size! What matters is the rounded, compact build.

Our first inspiration (and our very first "customers") were our own horses – the Andalusians of the Möningerberg PRE private stud. We were very happy with the riding comfort and quality of our original Spanish saddles, but would have liked easier handling when it came to re-padding, and especially an adjustable tree width. Since we couldn't find what we were looking for from local suppliers, we ended up designing and building our dream saddles ourselves. Over the years we've gathered a great deal of saddlery experience – which can now benefit you and your Icelandic horse too.

We develop adjustable saddles for large and small horses with baroque proportions and plenty of shoulder action. — Iberosattel®

What Demands Do Icelandic Horses Place on the Saddle?

Icelandic horses are baroque horses in miniature: everything about them is "one size smaller" than their bigger cousins – but in their proportions (short, wide back, little to almost no withers) they closely resemble the broad, rounded baroque breeds. As gaited horses, they also show a pronounced, high shoulder action, especially at the tölt.

So the saddle should be 1. short and 2. relatively wide, have 3. a short but wide bearing surface, and offer 4. sufficient freedom of movement for the circling shoulder blades.

Small off-the-shelf saddles are usually too narrow in the tree for Icelandic horses and restrict the shoulder. If the width fits, the saddle is then usually too long and presses on the lumbar vertebrae.

The length, tree width and bearing surface of the saddle must match the compact proportions of Icelandic horses; the shoulder must not be restricted. — Requirements for an Icelandic Horse Saddle

... and this matters to Icelandic horse riders

A saddle suited for tölting must allow the rider's hip to swing freely. Modern dressage saddles typically now have a deep, narrow seat that holds the rider fairly rigidly in one spot. When tölting, such a saddle restricts the movement of the pelvis.

What you need is 5. a seat with enough range of motion.

A tölt saddle shouldn't clamp the rider's pelvis too tightly. — Freedom of Movement in the Saddle

A suitably dimensioned baroque saddle can, for exactly these five reasons, make an excellent Icelandic horse saddle.

These Are the Advantages of Iberosattel® Saddles for Icelandic Horses

Baroque saddles from Iberosattel® have a wide bearing surface, can be made extremely short if needed, and thanks to a special cut of the saddle flaps, keep the shoulder completely free of padding and the rider's weight.

The Iberosattel® Saddle Tree

Iberosattel® Saddle Tree

The basis of every Iberosattel® is a saddle tree with adjustable tree width.

  • This allows repeated adjustments to changes in the horse's body shape.
  • The saddles are cut short (from 44 cm) and therefore perfect for Icelandic horses.
  • An Iberosattel® offers plenty of freedom for the loin and kidney area.

On short horses with a lot of shoulder action, the saddle often sits too far back and presses on the loin and kidney area. Saddles from Iberosattel® can be made very short, even in normal seat sizes. — Short Saddle
  • By fitting a flat-angled head plate, the shoulder stays free of the rider's weight and can work unimpeded.
  • Even more shoulder freedom can be achieved with the EWF system: here, the head plate is integrated into the saddle tree.
The pronounced shoulder action of gaited horses places special demands on the shoulder freedom of the saddle. Iberosattel® has the right solution. — Shoulder Freedom
  • The large, widely angled bearing surface of the saddle tree ensures that the saddle doesn't slip even on your Icelandic horse's wide, round back.
  • Not a priority for these comfortable gaited horses, but still an important bonus for sensitive riders: the Amazona Solution against saddle sores.

The Iberosattel® Comfort Pad (and Its Extra-Short Compact Version)

Iberosattel® Comfort Pad
Instead of conventional wedge panels, saddles from Iberosattel® have special saddle padding with an extra-wide bearing surface. The Iberosattel® Comfort Pad is also available in a compact version for short horses and ponies. Comfort Pad and Comfort Compact Pad are characterized by the following:

  • The extra-wide bearing surface of the padding matches the wide tree and distributes the rider's weight optimally over the short Icelandic horse's back.
  • The wide bearing surface increases friction – giving the saddle better grip even on a short, round horse's back.
Important for short horses: a saddle that makes optimal use of the width of the saddle area. The Comfort Pad and Comfort Compact Pad rest across the entire width of the back muscle, reducing saddle pressure and slip risk. — Wide Bearing Surface
  • Our saddles also feature a special V-girthing with various girthing options – ideal for saddle-slip candidates like the Icelandic horse!
  • The spinal channel, adjustable in width thanks to the flexible suspension of the padding, gives the spine plenty of room on both sides.
A sufficiently wide spinal channel allows the horse's back to arch and bend without restriction. — Spinal Freedom
  • The soft Comfort Pad, sewn from several layers of padding, is noticeably thinner than conventional, bulky saddle panels, and further reduced in the leg area. This allows weight and thigh aids to be transmitted very precisely – for even better communication with your clever Icelandic horse!

Iberosattel® Saddles Are the Perfect Leisure Saddles

Icelandic horses are mostly ridden as leisure horses – they (and their owners) are most in their element on long walks, trail rides or trekking on horseback. Classic dressage saddles are not the ideal choice for this: due to their small bearing surface, they cause pressure points on the horse's back during longer rides and are generally less comfortable for both horse and rider.

That's why we especially recommend our baroque saddles to Icelandic horse owners – this saddle type has an enlarged bearing surface and a roomier seat compared with the dressage saddle. Some of our baroque models are also excellently suited as trail saddles.

But the dressage saddles from Iberosattel® with Comfort Pad or Comfort Compact Pad also have what it takes to be a comfortable leisure saddle.

And of course, you can still use all our saddles without any trouble for dressage work in the arena too.
The small bearing surface and seat of conventional dressage saddles are not optimal for a leisure saddle. Iberosattel® does it better. — Leisure Saddles

Tip for Icelandic Horses: The Ibero Barock

Ibero Barock
Especially well suited as an Icelandic horse saddle is, for example, the Ibero Barock with a flat, soft seat, leg freedom and saddlebag rings for lovely outings with your Icelandic horse. As the Ibero Barock Compact, this saddle is also available in an extra-short version with a saddle length of just 44 centimeters.

... or the Alpha Vaquero

Alpha Vaquero
Also a great saddle for Icelandic horses is the Alpha Vaquero with soft vaquero knee blocks. With the Comfort Compact Pad for this working and trail saddle, Iberosattel® had  horses with a short back and little wither specifically in mind. The individually adjustable padding provides a slip-free seat and optimal weight distribution – and can even be configured so that seat sizes over 18 inches remain possible!

An Iberosattel® Is a Purchase for a Horse's Whole Life

An Iberosattel® serves you well for a horse's entire life. That's because the tree width of our saddles can be regulated, and we can also individually readjust the Comfort Pad again and again. Changes in the horse's body shape can be addressed directly via the saddle tree on the one hand, and via the padding on the other. As your horse grows, builds up or loses muscle, we can make the saddle perfectly fitting again and again. That's sustainable, saves time and hassle, and ultimately makes a lot of economic sense too.
Thanks to adjustable tree width and regulatable Comfort Pad, an Iberosattel® always fits perfectly. — A Purchase for Life

Personal Service at Your Location

You don't order our saddles online – the appointment at your location, the saddle fitting, advice and individual adjustment of the saddle tree and padding are essential parts of our business model. Saddles from the Iberosattel® Premium Line are even made entirely individually for you and your horse – made to measure and with numerous options to choose from.

In Bavaria, we handle the saddle-fitting appointment ourselves. In other German states and neighboring countries, saddlers selected by us offer this service on our behalf.

And we're still there for you after the saddle purchase: as long as you ride your Iberosattel®, you have us and our partner saddlers as a fixed point of contact whenever something doesn't feel quite right.

... And This Is What Our Customers Say

Frauke A.

2 wonderful saddles (Dressage Andaluz) that let my Icelandic horses and me do everything from gaited riding to dressage to trail riding with long day trips, and everyone is happy doing it. Thank you

Sabine N.

Top marks for my sister's beloved Dressage Andaluz. She's not only thrilled with the saddle, but everything else was really spot on too, from the advice from Stephan Wolfrum, through the contact in between, to today's service appointment with Miriam Thoma.
