Trail Riding with Horses – Say Goodbye to the Car, Hello to Nature

Trail riding is pretty much the antithesis of modern motorised travel: it is not about reaching a destination as quickly as possible. And not about a mechanised luxury that stands in contrast to the natural surroundings. The only fuel needed here is grass (and perhaps the odd handful of oats). The average speed is perhaps five kilometres per hour. 

The rhythm of travel is set by the course of the sun. The hooves of the horses make almost no sound on the soft forest floor. No pane of glass separates rider from the surrounding landscape; everything comes right up close. Moments of the most intense connection with nature alternate with dreamy phases during which the gaze turns inward. Only the moment counts.

A trail ride sounds like pure freedom – but a bit of planning is part of it, so that the trip runs smoothly for you and your horse. Set off directly from your home stable or bring your horse to the starting point by trailer. For longer trips or unfamiliar regions, your own horse can also stay at home, with a guided ride on hired horses as an exciting alternative. Whether 15 or 30 kilometres a day – the right stage length and a varied route are crucial. And where will you spend the night? Anything from a tent to accommodation at a riding stable is possible.

Before setting off with your horse, you should familiarise yourself with the applicable rules. In many German states, riders may only use wide paths in the forest – in Schleswig-Holstein, only designated bridle paths are allowed. Clear regulations also apply in road traffic: riding is only permitted at the very right-hand edge of the road, and lighting is mandatory after dark. In Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia, you even need a special riding permit badge or a riding licence plate. For a worry-free trail ride, it pays to know the regulations in detail.

Whether you are just starting out with trail riding or already have plenty of experience – having the right contacts makes many things easier. The VFD (Vereinigung der Freizeitreiter und -fahrer Deutschland e.V., the German Association of Leisure Riders and Drivers) actively campaigns for riders' right of access and offers a strong network for exchange and support. The German Trail Riding Academy (Deutsche Wanderreiter-Akademie) specialises in training and offers courses as well as guided training rides to prepare trail riders in the best possible way.

Horses are naturally built for long distances, but not every breed is equally suited to trail riding. Robust animals with a sturdy build, short legs and hard hooves clearly have the edge here. Breeds such as the Haflinger, Criollo or Trakehner are reliable partners, as are gaited horses with comfortable special gaits, such as the Icelandic Horse or the Rocky Mountain Horse.

But horses outside these “ideal criteria” can also be well suited – as long as they are healthy, trained and mentally balanced. A horse that moves calmly in unfamiliar surroundings, stays peaceful in groups and is sure-footed in open terrain will also cope well with longer trail rides. With patience and preparation, almost any horse can become a loyal companion on long tours.

A successful trail ride stands or falls with the right equipment – for both rider and horse.

• The saddle: It is the centrepiece of your equipment and must fit perfectly. A poorly fitting saddle can not only injure the horse during the ride, but also disrupt the weight distribution.
• Weight and balance: A maximum of 15 to 20 percent of the horse's body weight may be carried on its back. Saddle bags should be fastened evenly and securely so that they neither wobble nor rub.
• Rider's equipment: Your clothing must be sturdy, comfortable and weatherproof. Well worn-in shoes and a weatherproof jacket are a must, as are reflectors for safety at dusk or in the rain.
• Packing list: Remember water and provisions, but also a first-aid kit, maps, rain protection and a change of clothes. If sleeping outdoors, a sleeping bag, tarp and sleeping mat are also needed.

A trail riding saddle must above all do one thing: offer horse and rider maximum comfort even over long distances. A large bearing surface is essential for distributing the weight of the saddle, rider and luggage evenly and avoiding pressure points. Freedom of movement for the horse and a flexible seat for the rider are equally important, so that both can enjoy the ride relaxed.
