Working Equitation Basics / Working Equitation Getting Started – In a Club or on Your Own
The best way to get started in the sport is under professional guidance. The German Working Equitation association currently has more than 40 regional groups that offer public training sessions and courses to interested riders. Of course, you can also search online for Working Equitation trainers independently of this association structure.

Or would you rather practise on your own first and see how your horse reacts to the new challenges? Most of the obstacles of the Working Equitation trail can actually be recreated (or at least improvised) with very simple means at your home arena. Cones and poles can probably be found in every stable – but even straw bales, feed buckets, chairs or boards can be used instead.
With such materials, you can already practise the simple and parallel slalom, the reverse slalom, the barrels, the sidepass and the pen. A table for the jug can surely be found too (and a water bottle can, of course, stand in for the jug).

Five Steps to Getting Started in Working Equitation
- Understand the basics: Familiarise yourself with the origins of Working Equitation. Understand what this discipline involves and whether it is suitable for you and your horse.
- Choose the right saddle: Choose a treeless saddle that is ideally suited to Working Equitation. The right saddle gives you and your horse security and comfort both in training and at tournaments. It should encourage correct posture and not restrict the horse’s movement.
- Build trail obstacles yourself: Consider building simple trail obstacles yourself so you can practise cost-effectively. Use everyday materials to improvise obstacles such as a slalom, sidepass or a bridge.
- Seek professional support: Take lessons with experienced trainers to learn the techniques and requirements of Working Equitation and ensure that you and your horse are training correctly.
- Continuing education and building a network: Get involved in the Working Equitation community. Exchanging ideas with other enthusiasts can offer additional learning opportunities and support.
