Working Equitation is fundamentally suitable for anyone who wants to try something new with their horse. The discipline is open to all breeds – what counts is motivation and enjoyment of the sport.

Working Equitation: Horse and Rider at the Tournament
Horse and rider should, however, bring a few things to the table: a solid basic dressage training. Your horse should respond well to fine seat and leg aids and be able to ride straight lines, bends and circles. In addition to the three basic gaits (including smooth transitions into trot and canter), rein-back must also be mastered: these skills are already required at tournaments in the Introductory Class WE of Working Equitation. Patiently waiting at a specific position is also part of the toolkit for this sport.
Harmony Between Rider and Horse
Riders should accordingly master the correct application of aids and be able to guide their horse effortlessly from A to B. Since small jumps are often part of the course, Working Equitation also requires a certain amount of saddle security. If your horse has never jumped before and you feel that “taking off” could be a challenge for both of you, cavaletti training can be good preparation for Working Equitation.

- Working Equitation reinforces what you have learned in dressage. Many horses visibly “get it” when trail riding: movements that can feel a little pointless in the dressage arena are embedded here in a context that makes sense.
- Working Equitation is pure calmness training. Many different obstacles, which look a little different and are arranged differently on every trail – the more of these your horse has seen and mastered, the more flexible, nerve-strong and terrain-confident it becomes.
- Every horse has a chance: in Working Equitation, rideability, attitude and character count. Spectacular gaits are secondary.
- Working Equitation is a friendly sport. Dressage tournaments can sometimes be a little posh or reserved: riders and horses stiff and finely turned out, the atmosphere not exactly warm... At a “working” event, things look different: the dress code is much less strict, the variety much greater – and people even cheer for the competition. What’s more, a three-day Working Equitation tournament is a bit like a special camping mini-break with like-minded people. If you enjoy sleeping in a motorhome and meeting nice people alongside your riding, this is exactly your thing.
