"My horse Hidalgo and I have a long saddle odyssey behind us, which almost completely ruined riding for both of us and also nearly ruined us physically.
We then had several saddles, all fitted by a saddler, but one disaster followed the next. The last saddle was a made-to-measure saddle from a well-known German company. I personally have always enjoyed riding in saddles of this brand, and our saddle was lovely. A really smart, comfortable piece, but unfortunately only for me as the rider.
My Hidalgo always went tense, and we both had major problems with sitting the trot. I gradually despaired, as after several years it still simply wasn't possible for me to sit properly to my own horse. Hidalgo would grunt as soon as I sat the first stride. It was pure stress for both of us. Several times I had spoken with the saddler about the saddle not fitting. His back became increasingly sensitive, tension built up in the lumbar area, and the first small areas of muscle atrophy became noticeable.
What did the saddle maker say? Either I was riding too poorly, or my horse simply didn't like a tree saddle. That was the end of the matter for him. Well, in the end I had to sell yet another saddle, again at a considerable loss.
Having known my Hidalgo for such a long time by now, I pictured what his saddle would need to be like. It has to have a wide gullet, leave enough room for the shoulder, be softly padded, have a wide panel channel, wide panels, and be flexible enough to accommodate the swing in his back.
Where to find such a saddle? Well, that's how we came to Iberosattel®. At first I was still sceptical due to the bad experiences with saddles, but ever since we've had this saddle, riding has changed for the better for both horse and rider.
